Description:
Don't go into the forest of Ormonde', warn the old people in Maurice Ravel's choral piece Ronde. The forest is teeming with satyrs, gnomes, evil witches and other terrifying forest creatures. Their enumeration was the starting point for the composition. Conceived as a round song, Ravel allows the melody to be heard in different roles distributed across the vocal registers, a formal arrangement reminiscent of performance patterns already used in the French chanson of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Ravel arranges the fauns and fairies from the forest of Ormonde into a fast-paced word-painting that demands rhythmic precision and, above all, convincing declamation from the performing choir.
