A mass composition by a young Viennese composer: in 1760, at the age of 16, Marianna von Martines (1744-1812) composed her "Seconda Messa". Just one year later, another mass from her pen was performed in Vienna. Even as a child, Martines received a great deal of encouragement; her teachers included the young Joseph Haydn. Martines achieved considerable renown as a performer, composer and teacher and was the first woman to be accepted into the renowned "Accademia Filarmonica" in Bologna, to which Johann Christian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart also belonged. The "Seconda Messa" in the galant style has a rather short duration of half an hour. Martines illustrates her mastery of the "stile antico" through the traditional use of fugues at the end of the mass sections. The Gloria and Credo are through-composed, with frequent alternations between solo and tutti. A work that can also be performed effectively with a small ensemble.
