The church choir in the small village of Sirbis in the Thuringian Vogtland region celebrated its twentieth anniversary in December 2008. The present cantata "Seht auf und erhebt eure Häupter" was composed for the festive service held to mark the occasion and was performed from the manuscript for the first time on 2 Advent 2008. The underlying text of the cantata refers to the second Sunday of Advent. The motto of the week from Luke 21:28 has the function of a refrain and is performed vocally and instrumentally in the cantata. The four verses of the hymn EG 152 "Wir warten dein, o Gottes Sohn" by Philipp Friedrich Hiller are performed in movements from one to four voices, accompanied by the instruments in the 1st and 4th verses. Every choirmaster is free to have the two- and three-part movements of verses 2 and 3 sung by a smaller ensemble. The solo version is also possible. The Intrade on the hymn EG 6 for the 2nd Advent "Ihr lieben Christen, freut euch nun" serves as a prelude and postlude, which can also be performed by the organ.
The cantata is dedicated in heartfelt friendship to the singers of the church choir in Sirbis in Vogtland and their conductor, retired senior church councillor Hans Schäfer, in their solidarity with the common cause of musica sacra.
