Description:
Die Erstaufführung des Bachs drittem Kantatenjahrgang zugehörigen Werks fand am 2. Weihnachtstag 1725 statt. Der mit Ausnahme des Schlußchorals von Georg Christian Lehms (1711) stammende Text nimmt Bezug auf Stephanus, den ersten Märtyrer des Neuen Testaments und Namenspatron des 26. Dezembers. In einem Dialog zwischen Seele (Sopran) und Jesus (Bass) wird in jeweils zwei ausdrucksvollen Arien von den Anfechtungen der Sünde berichtet. In der Sopranarie 'Ich ende behende mein irdisches Leben' ist der Solovioline ein dankbarer Part zugewiesen. Das gesamte Orchester ist im ersten Satz und zusammen mit dem Chor im Schlusschoral beschäftigt.
