Description:
Iceland's harsh climate and dark winters characterize the country's folklore. The rugged landscapes become props for stories and myths that are passed down from generation to generation. Fantastic creatures such as trolls and elves often play a role. However, the story on which the Icelandic lullaby "Sofðu unga ástin mín" is based really happened in the mid-18th century. Johann Sigurjonsson took up the story again in 1911 in his drama "Bjærg-Eyvind og hans hustru" (Bjærg-Eyvind and his wife). It tells the story of Fjalla-Eyvindur, an Icelander convicted of theft, and his wife Halla, who flee from persecution to the Icelandic highlands. Legend has it that the couple survived 20 years in the wilderness. In Sigurjonsson's drama, Halla sings the lullaby taken up by Elisabeth Fußeder before throwing her child into a waterfall so as not to abandon it to the pursuers. The composer has already won numerous prizes for her works. "Sofðu unga ástin mín" impresses with its urgency and sensitive treatment of the lullaby material. In addition to sung words and sounds, she uses other vocal techniques such as speaking, whispering, audible breath, whistling and calling. In order to make this demanding work (Carus 9.310/00) accessible to ambitious amateur choirs, the composer has created a reduced version with less difficulty (Carus 9.310/50, SATB, Sprechchor, Sprecher*in).
