Description:
Stillae was commissioned by the Dortmund Choir Academy's youth concert choir, which won first prize in the 2018 Mårten Jansson Choir Competition. The text is by the American poet Charles Anthony Silvestri.
The poem is reminiscent of medieval poetry in its form with four short Latin verses. The first three verses give us brief impressions of Mary's life with Jesus through the image of drops (Stillae):
Drops of water - as she bathes her child
Tears - as she mourns his fate
Drops of blood - falling from the cross onto her face
Music and text trace the development from joy to sorrow to deepest grief. A final verse finally takes us to another level. The request to Mary to convey our drops (prayers) to Jesus.
