Lobgesang was written for the 400th anniversary of the invention of moveable typeby Johannes Gutenberg, an event celebrated inLeizig in the Summer of 1840. The work unitesdome of Mendlessohn's most pressing compositional concerns: to bring the Church and the concert hall one step closer togetheras he felt had already been accomplished in England, and, at the same time, to give expression to his dydactic and educational impetus while creating a novel genre transcending conventional boundaries.
