Description:
Antonin Rejcha's "Te Deum" from 1825, which remained unpublished at the time and is presented here as a first edition, is undoubtedly one of the great, albeit little-known, Te Deum settings of the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras. The basic key of E major alone sets this richly scored work apart from many other settings of the "Ambrosian hymn of praise". Rejcha makes clear and varied use of scoring, movement types and coloration. The composition offers the choir a wealth of rewarding tasks, particularly in the large oratorio-style choruses Nos. 1 and 11 as well as in the double fugues Nos. 4 and 9, the latter of which are all performed "mezza voce", i.e. quietly - an effect of the quiet kind!
