Today, César Franck (1822-1890) is considered one of the most important French composers and organists of his time. His main work "Les Béatitudes", a monumental oratorio setting of the Beatitudes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5:3ff.), is on a par with the great oratorios of the 19th century. Franck himself did not live to see the extremely successful premiere in the summer of 1891.

The symmetrical structure of the work conveys a great arc: A short prologue is followed by eight movements in which the words of Christ are juxtaposed with contrasting earthly scenes. The choir plays an important role as commentator on the events. The end of the work is an overwhelming hymn: the entry into paradise.

This Carus edition is the first time that the "Béatitudes" have been published in a modern, scholarly Urtext edition. The orchestration corresponds to the French orchestra of the time. Both solos and choral parts can be reduced in number by cleverly distributing the parts. The score offers numerous tips for a practicable realization, based on the editors' own testing. A new piano reduction, prepared with good playability in mind, replaces the historical reprint edition previously available from Carus. Even an ambitious amateur choir can perform this magnificent work.
