With well-known Advent and Christmas carols in a variety of original movements, with a children's choir for the shepherds' scene and with congregational hymns integrated into the sequence, Herzogenberg, a friend of Brahms, created a setting of the Christmas story that is popular in the best sense of the word in collaboration with the Strasbourg theologian Friedrich Spitta. The simple but artistic and atmospheric instrumental accompaniment with only oboe, string orchestra and organ (harmonium) serves a broad practicality. The soloist parts can also be performed mainly by amateurs.
The composer, who conducted himself, experienced the happiest hour of his life at the premiere on 3 Advent 1894 in St. Thomas Church in Strasbourg with 2,000 visitors.
