Description:
With its magnificent, almost operatic music, the Passion oratorio "Christus am Ölberge" is a different Passion oratorio that is definitely worth hearing and experiencing - and is undoubtedly unique in the history of vocal-instrumental sacred music. In this work, Beethoven succeeded on the one hand in continuing an 18th-century tradition, but on the other hand also in shaping the flourishing genre of the German-language oratorio with his own personal style - the Viennese performances of the "Creation" and Haydn's "Seasons" had only taken place a few years previously. He based his composition on contemporary opera and used the text of an opera librettist to realize the dramatic situation of the doubting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and his imprisonment in musically profound scenes.
