Joseph Haydn's monumental oratorio "The Seasons" (Hob. XXI:3) is a masterpiece of Viennese Classicism and one of the most important secular vocal works in music history. Following the great success of "The Creation", Haydn set the cycle of nature and rural life in the course of the year to music. The libretto by Gottfried van Swieten is based on James Thomson's famous epic and leads through the four sections of spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Haydn unfolds a colorful sound painting that ranges from onomatopoeic descriptions of nature to rustic hunting and drinking songs to profound reflections on the transience of life. With its combination of folkloristic freshness, contrapuntal mastery and orchestral brilliance, this late work remains a timeless testimony to Haydn's inexhaustible compositional creativity.
