A setting a poem by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, 'Our Lady of Vladimir' ('To Our Lady'), inspired by the famous Russian icon, Our Lady of Vladimir by an unknown 12th-century artist. Simon Beattie was buoyed on to set the texts of this and it's partner work ('One day, God walked in') to music following a performance of his 'Advent Calendar', which sets another of Williams's poems. The poet was at the performance and was full of praise for the closeness of the musical setting to the feeling of the poem. Thoughtful and always guided by the text, with minimal divisi though some harmonic challenge, the setting is appropriate for intermediate to advanced choirs and would make an engaging and thought-provoking anthem or concert piece.
