Tonight I Dance Alone for double choir a cappella is about three short scenes from the life of an old man. We meet him before his wedding, before the celebration of his wedding day and as an old widower who tells his grandson:
Soon we will dance in the God-light,
My love and I.
Soon will the moon be ours again,
And the endless shining stars
In the halls of heaven.
Soon, my love, very soon;
But tonight, one last time,
Tonight I dance alone.
The text and the tone-painting music are deeply moving. They form an ideal combination. Tonight I Dance Alone is Mårten Jansson's first collaboration with the well-known lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri. The piece is a rewarding challenge for high-performance choirs and ensembles.
The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus under the direction of Philip Barnes performed the work for the first time on October 1, 2017 in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.
