Description:
In literature, a pastorelle or sta pastorale is a pastoral poem or a shepherd's song, which was particularly widespread in the Middle Ages. The romantic texts deal with rural idylls in which a knight woos a beautiful shepherdess (Latin "pastora"). In painting, pastoral motifs depict romanticized scenes from the life of a shepherdess. In music, the pastorelle or pastorale became particularly popular from the Baroque period onwards. The pieces in this genre also have a rural, idyllic character and are usually in a triplet time signature (e.g. 6/8, 9/8 or 3/4). The predominantly simple melodic progressions express the natural beauty of nature. A famous example is Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major op. 68 "Pastorale", in which the composer musically expresses his impressions of his rural surroundings. In his "4 Pastorelli", Pavel Staněk gives the wind orchestra a very transparent and chamber music-like performance. With his incomparable style of instrumentation and voice leading, he has created four enchanting little pieces of music that are particularly effective when played one after the other as a complete work. Simple melodies that intertwine wonderfully create a peaceful and idyllic atmosphere. The first movement "Allegretto moderato" is a short piece in 3/4 time with a gentle, lovely melody. In the second movement "Animato" - also in 3/4 time - you can almost see a cozy peasant dance with the strongly emphasized first beat and a cheerful impression. The third movement "Moderato", in a minor key in 2/4 time with a dotted melody, contrasts with the other movements and conveys a rather melancholy mood. The short final fourth movement "Allegretto" is again in 3/4 time and gives the "4 Pastorelli" a beautiful idyllic conclusion.
