Description:
5 Songs for Wind Ensemble are, as the title suggests, five short pieces for concert band. They range from everyday miniatures to more introspective works.
The first, "To reach for fire," is built on melodic lines that stretch upward toward a goal that often slips away.
"The Dream of an Untidy Kitchen Table" is more of an everyday song, about the wish to let things overflow and be a bit more careless.
"Flowers Grow From Your Heart" is a classic love piece, using the ensemble's different timbres to create shifting colors.
"The Theatre of the Soul" depicts how we can deceive ourselves and put on a kind of theatre around our own thoughts and actions.
"Ice" is warm and almost without conflict; I liked the idea of giving a piece a title that suggests the opposite of what it actually is.
Together, these five pieces form a small collection. They may be performed individually or as a whole.
The pieces were written for Fortunen's Sommarspel in 2025.
