Description:
August Söderman (1832-1876) is considered to be the first national romantic composer in Sweden. From his father Johan Wilhelm, who conducted theatre orchestras, he had a great musical talent and he was admitted to the Musical Conservatory already at the age of 15. There he studied violin, piano and oboe. Barely 20 years old (1851) he was engaged as conductor at a theatre in Stockholm, where he developed his splendid technique of instrumentation. From 1860 he worked with the Royal Theatre both as chorus master and as assistant conductor. Söderman probably wrote the intermezzo A Sailor's Life in the 1850's. Two decades after his death (1898) it was published in version for piano.
