The overture "Abu Hassan" by Carl Maria von Weber is a short, lively work that serves as an introduction to the opera. It was composed in 1811 and premiered in Munich, marking one of Weber's early successes. The overture is known for its bright, romantic character, with just enough 'Turkish' influence to give it a special touch. The plot of "Abu Hassan" is based on a story from Arabian Nights. Background: The story of "Abu Hassan" is an adaptation of Le dormeur éveillé (The Sleeper Awakened) by Antoine Galland. This transcription: Every effort has been made to make this transcription as faithful to the original as possible. The grouping, which indicates the phrasing, comes directly from the original manuscript score. The dynamics correspond to the original, but in bars such as 52-53, editorial dynamic markings have been added to give color and preserve the proportion of voices. The timpani part has been modernized to include notes other than the tonic and dominant. This transcription is a whole tone lower than the original.
