Description:
This march is dedicated to the VMA-214 Squadron of the United States Marine Corps. Based on the Pacific island of Vella Lavella, it took part in the Guadalcanal campaign between 1942 and 1943 and was equipped with Chance Vought F4U Corsairs, also known as l'uccellaccio because of the folded wings on its W-wing. The squadron was commanded by Major Gregory Boyington, who was not only one of the Marines' best pilots, but also a tireless troublemaker: he loved to get drunk, gamble and challenge his friends to wrestling matches in the middle of crowded bars. in the middle of crowded bars. Pacific Command, eager to make the most of the human material available at this delicate moment in the war, entrusted Boyington with the task of forming a new wing. The unit was to become perhaps the most famous flying squadron in the Marine Corps, known as the "Black Sheep Squadron". The name came from the fact that all the pilots were 'orphans' and had not been assigned to a squadron when they were formed, and from the fact that they had few reliable aircraft and no mechanics. Boyington was nicknamed "Gramps" because, at 31, he was ten years older than most of the Marines who served under him. The name "Gramps" was later changed to "Pappy".
