Nordic Capriccio, Op. 28, was composed in 1943. About its creation, Erland von Koch wrote: This was my first composition that truly expressed my emerging interest in folk music. The foundation is an old polska in the Dorian mode, found in a booklet of traditional tunes from Dalarna written in church modes, which my mother gave me while I was ill. I wrote the piece from my bed, and after three days it was finished. The spectacular combination of driving drum rhythms and whirling dance makes Nordic Capriccio one of the most evocative works in Swedish orchestral music.
