Description:
The idiom "Cloud Nine" describes a state of supreme happiness and the feeling of being on top of the world. True to its name, this work is an energetic piece full of enthusiasm and joy. "Cloud Nine!" was commissioned by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force 4th Division Band. The composition was created at the request of First Lieutenant Hiroki Hayashida, who was seeking a brilliant and festive piece suitable for both a concert opening and an encore. The piece is characterized by catchy melodies and sophisticated, "stylish" harmonies that immediately capture the audience’s attention. Throughout the work, the driving force of syncopated rhythms creates dynamic momentum and imbues the composition with a lively energy. Whether as a rousing concert opener or a dazzling finale to a passionate performance—it is my hope that both the performers and the audience will experience a moment of pure joy and literally feel as if they are on "Cloud Nine."
The world premiere took place on March 3, 2025, in Imari (Saga Prefecture), conducted by First Lieutenant Hayashida with the JGSDF 4th Division Band.
