Description:
The piece "Dionysus" (the god of wine and blossoming nature) begins with a broad Largo, the first and very calm theme. This is followed by the first true bacchanal with its two themes: the first theme is very light and closed and the second theme, with its bound character, contrasts with it. The Presto is based on these two themes: There are beautiful nuances of color in each, sudden piani and forti, crescendi and decrescendi; a changing instrumentation, variations and modulations. This is followed by a Largo with the opening theme surrounded by ornaments. In the short Poco Animato we hear the last theme at the end and then the Bacchanal breaks out for the second time and leads the piece to its climax at great speed. André Waignein, who studied wind orchestra composition with Marcel Poot, wrote a contemporary arrangement of this masterpiece.
