Bold and dramatic, "El Toro Bravo" by Randall Standridge is a Grade 2 concert march inspired by the style and spirit of the Paso Doble. Set in an unconventional 3/4 meter, the work maintains the forward drive and structure of a traditional march while introducing a fresh rhythmic perspective.

Strong melodic writing, vibrant harmonies, and a sense of intensity throughout evoke the power and presence of its namesake. Drawing on Spanish musical influences while remaining accessible to developing ensembles, "El Toro Bravo" offers a unique and engaging addition to any concert or festival program.

Program Notes:

"El Toro Bravo" is a concert march inspired by the tradition of the Paso Doble, reimagined here in a 3/4 meter rather than the more traditional 2/4.

This presented an interesting challenge. How do you write in 3/4 and still make it feel like a march instead of a waltz? That question became the driving force behind the composition of this piece. The goal was to maintain the forward motion, clarity, and structure of a march while incorporating the rhythmic feel of a triple meter.

The work follows a traditional march form, while drawing heavily from Paso Doble influences in its harmonic language and melodic style. The result is a hybrid that blends the bold, dramatic character of Spanish music with a slightly different rhythmic perspective.

This piece also serves as a companion to my earlier work, "El Zorro Rojo". In both cases, I chose to center the music around an animal protagonist. There is something compelling about that imagery, and in the case of the bull, it represents strength, ferocity, and presence.

It is important to note that this work is not intended to be a traditional Paso Doble, but rather a tribute to a style and sound that I deeply admire. My hope is that it captures some of the energy, color, and grandeur associated with that tradition, while offering something a little different.
