Description:
Inspired by the famous Dutch song "Merck toch hoe sterck," this work depicts the siege of Bergen op Zoom in 1622, when the city held out against Spanish troops for nearly three months before finally repelling them. The music alternates between light and shadow: The song’s theme evokes the tension of the siege, the uncertainty, and the harshness of the fighting, while the radiant fanfares symbolize the courage, hope, and determination of a city that refuses to give up. Throughout the work, these two worlds engage in a dialogue and respond to one another, until finally light and renewal triumph. *Fortitude* celebrates resistance in the face of adversity, collective strength, and the will to stand firm when everything seems to urge one to give up.
