Folk tunes were collected as a part of building Norway as a independent country. Fiddlers and folk singers learned from each other. In the early 19 hundredth recordings were used to collect tunes and educated musicologists could write down a version of what they heard.
Both tunes used in "From Telemark" are a part of this rich tradition centered around the town Bø in Telemark. The tunes are very different in character. Together they make a natural formal structure, from thoughtful and dark colors to bright and dancing fiddlers' music.
