La Gioconda, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito, is Amilcare Ponchielli's (1844-1886) most successful theatrical work. It includes two dance pieces: the Furlana at the end of Act 1 and the Danza delle ore in Act 3.

The Dance of the Hours has a precise choreographic outline: it is a masked ball that successively embraces the "hours" of dawn, day, evening and night and ends with a wild gallop. This gallop is a kind of fast polka in binary rhythm and unbridled tempo. A French variant of this is the Can-Can. The gallop in the finale of the Dance of the Hours is reminiscent of certain playful dances by the composer Jacques Offenbach, such as the famous Can-Can, which concludes the overture of the operetta Orphée aux enfers.

Galop arranged by Franco Cesarini is perfect for an encore!
