Composed for the Musikverein Schwarzenberg (Bregenzerwald, Austria) for the 750th anniversary of the village in 2020
When I received the commission for a work for the 750th anniversary of the village of Schwarzenberg in the Bregenzerwald (Austria) in 2016, I thought long and hard about what form I should give the composition. After getting to know the local music association, its members who play music with great dedication and passion, and the village nestled in a picturesque landscape, I thought a radiant, optimistic opening piece for the celebrations would be best. The word GAUDIUBILATE is made up of the two Latin words GAUDIUM and JUBILATE. GAUDIUM means joy, JUBILATE stands for jubilation and festivity. The two omnipresent main musical themes of the composition - the dignified and magnificent opening theme, which stands for tradition and values, and the forward-looking second theme (presented in flute and clarinet) - were both composed in a small local mountain hut. The view of the valley against the impressive backdrop of the "Bödele" recreational area provided a wonderful source of inspiration. The result of my work is a five-minute symphonic overture in a romantic guise. A slow, hymnic introduction is followed by a lively "Allegro vivace" which - after a brief reprise of the opening - leads to a fast-paced conclusion.
