Michelangelo Merisi (1571-1610), known as Caravaggio, is one of the greatest Italian painters and a central figure of European Baroque. His tumultuous life, marked by excesses and a murder, reflects an existence as intense as his art. Renowned for his realistic and dramatic depiction of reality, he used light as a divine symbol. Composer Antonio Rossi, captivated by his work and story, translated the painter's genius and contradictions into music. The three movements of the composition evoke Caravaggio's emotional contrasts, the interplay of light and shadow, and his existential profile.

In the initial "Moderato", the brief introduction, with rapid descending arpeggios, brings the listener into a dramatic atmosphere that will be revisited later in the narrative, leading to a celebratory theme with a vaguely Baroque flavor, outlining the profile of the artist who dominated his era. In the central "Adagio", the melody, first presented by the trumpet and then developed by the wind band, describes elements of Caravaggio's painting, such as the expressive strength of the characters and the contrasts of light and shadow in which they are immersed. In the final "Allegro", attention focuses on the existential aspect of the artist, both genius and transgressive, who despite a troubled life and premature death, managed to leave humanity with a wealth of eternally beautiful works.
