Description:
Intermezzo No. 2 is among the most tender and beloved pieces Brahms ever wrote. Composed in his later years, it is one of the final piano pieces in which the composer confides his innermost thoughts, in a mood of cheerful nostalgia and deep emotion. Everything rests on a long, lyrical melody full of tenderness and melancholy, which unfolds over exquisite harmonies and a delicate interweaving of voices. The more contemplative middle section takes on an almost intimate quality before the opening theme returns calmly. This transcription for wind orchestra naturally extends the harmonic richness of the original: the color palette of the winds takes up Brahms’s lines, reveals their inner hues, and lends this music a new warmth. A work of great expressive beauty, ideal for showcasing an ensemble’s sensitivity and lyricism.
