Invercargill March is one of the best-known works by New Zealand composer Alexander Frame Lithgow, a leading figure in early 20th-century wind music. Composed in 1901, this march is dedicated to the city of Invercargill, located in the far south of New Zealand. The work follows in the tradition of British marching music but expands upon it with its own sonic energy and harmonic richness. Its instantly recognizable main theme is lively, direct, and festive in character. The composition alternates between contrasting sections featuring rhythmic brilliance and melodic passages. It exemplifies Lithgow’s style, which combines melodic catchiness with effective formal structure. The work is widely performed by wind orchestras and is considered a classic concert march. Its popularity quickly spread beyond New Zealand and gained international recognition. To this day, "Invercargill March" remains an emblematic work of the Anglo-Saxon march tradition.
