Commissioned work by the MMK St. Stefan im Rosental (Kpm. Norbert Hirschmann). In the year in which the inn "Rosenwirt" (Sankt Stefan im Rosental A-8083) was founded, Europe was in the midst of one of the cruellest wars of all time. It is also the year of the death of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1830-1916). The excessive recklessness of the decision-makers, which may well have contributed decisively to the escalation of this war, is stylistically described by the admirable lightness that is characteristic of Strauss's works of "Viennese music". The force of the atrocities is countered by the instrumental reference to the otherwise equally beloved "Verdi sounds", thus recalling the devastating battles on the Italian border. A conciliatory hymn is heard in the trio. This represents a solemn promise cast in sound and a musical invitation to eternal peace. May this musical invitation be a conscientious companion to us all in the future and may peace remain with us. Just as our inns should continue to occupy their fixed place as a meeting place for all people and thus be able to contribute their part to it.
