Description:
In this final installment of his King Raven trilogy, the composer uses Welsh folk music to depict the continuation of the story told by Stephen Lawhead in his reinterpretation of the Robin Hood legend. In it, the hero becomes a Welsh freedom fighter who resists the Norman incursions into Wales. Emerging from the cold, gray mists of the Welsh morning, King Raven and his men set out once again to confront the Norman invaders (Come to the Battle). But as in most battles, there are casualties, and soon they must pause to rest and mourn the fallen (Dafyd y Garreg Wen). They then resume their guerrilla attacks, frequently employing cunning and deception to offset the Normans’ numerical superiority (The Witches of Llanddona). After a series of such skirmishes, King Raven finally restores his rightful position as ruler of Elfael in Caer Cadarn. This is depicted by the interweaving of the King Raven theme with "Hen Wlad y Nhadau," the Welsh national anthem.
