Description:
It takes an exceptionally large percussion section to bring the mood of the Far East to the listener, the world of Buddhist thought, the trace of unusual, even mysterious timbres and shades that a wind ensemble is capable of. The composition itself is divided into two movements: Grave - Presto Concitato. The Grave almost gives the impression of a spiritualistic session: it begins in a low register with string bass and timpani in order to enter into a dialog with the solo instrument. The bass clarinet enters this conversation, with the murmur of the low winds together with the percussion evoking a kind of funeral march. The Presto, on the other hand, begins with the motif of a striking brass fanfare and the definitive end of this ritual is finally reached not only through the use of the 10/16 time signature, but also through the use of frantically playing woodwinds, which suddenly bring us back to reality.
