Description:
The Christmas season is a time when the most beautiful stories are told. There are only a few female characters in these stories. And yet they exist in many countries. In Italy, Santa Claus is associated with the Befana, in Russia with the Babushka, in Scandinavia with Lucia, in Germany with Mother Hulda, in Wales with Mari Lwyd and in France with Aunt Arie. What these women have in common is that they also bring gifts to the children. The music begins with a majestic introduction that takes us right into the middle of the realm of Christmas legends. Timpani and bells then introduce a fast, cheerful and dynamic part. Finally, the music becomes softer. A Christmas chorale is first played by the brass and then taken up by the woodwinds. The work ends in a subdued atmosphere, as if there were only the Christmas tree sparkling in the darkness. Lady Claus was commissioned by the Harmonie Municipale de Montbéliard, conducted by Laurent Zemp, on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. The work pays homage to those legendary women who also contribute to the beauty and magic of Christmas – not only by bringing gifts, but also by passing on the human values they stand for.
