When I was a music student in Bergen in the late 1980s, conductor, arranger, and educator Tom Brevik commissioned me to arrange two folk tune suites for all young bands.
The idea behind the suites was that most school bands should be able to play them. Another motivation was the folk music heritage and the idea that this rich musical tradition should also be accessible to our bands — and, not least, to the youngsters.
The pieces are well-suited for developing bands, but since all parts are included in the score, they also make sense for bands with a solid instrumentation. Our folk music is a treasure full of gems — always a great addition to the repertoire.
