Ruggiero Leoncavallo was an Italian opera composer and librettist. Although he would produce numerous operas and other songs throughout his career it is his two-act work Pagliacci (1892) and the song 'Mattinata' that remained his lasting contributions.

'Mattinata' ('Morning') was the first song ever written expressly for the 'Gramophone Company' (nowadays: HMV).

Leoncavallo composed the 'Mattinata' in 1904 and dedicated it to Enrico Caruso, who was the first to record it in 1904 with the composer at the piano. Ever since, this piece has become a concert favourite.
