Description:
My Lord, What a Morning is a spiritual with a call-and-response structure as well as verses and chorus. Like many spirituals, the text has no single author or composer, but was probably written collectively. Many spirituals were written by enslaved people, but "My Lord, What a Morning" was most likely written by free blacks in a North American town. A first version was published by Richard Allen in Philadelphia in 1801. The text of the spiritual refers to numerous biblical passages, from the shooting stars in Revelation and the Gospel of Matthew to the trumpet blasts in 1 Corinthians and 1 Thessalonians.
