All four of Johan Svendsens four Norwegian Rhapsodies where written in the period 1876 - 1877. The thematic material in these are based on melodies from Ludvig M. Lindemans collection 'Older and newer Norwegian Mountain Songs'. Rhapsody no. 2 is said to be a masterpiece in four settings. The melody 'The forest witch and Elland (mail name)) in the 1st and 4th part binds this piece together. The Andante is based on 'Sjugurd and the Troll bride', while the scherzo is two dance melodies combined.
