Description:
O Mio Babbino Caro (O My Dear Father) is an aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). The aria is sung by Lauretta after the friction between Schicchi and his future in-laws has reached a climax. The aria provides a contrasting entr'acte full of lyrical simplicity and unanimous love in the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, swindling, and feuds in the medieval Florence of Puccini's only comedy. The aria immediately became a sentimental favorite and was also loved outside the opera world as a classic Italian song. Among the more famous sopranos who have sung this aria are Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, etc. The aria was lip-synched by Rowan Atkinson as a street performer in the role of Mr. Bean in the film "Mr. Bean's Holiday" (2007) in order to finance his trip to the Cannes Film Festival. In the 1985 film "A Room With A View," this aria is incorporated as one of the main themes. Steve Cortland made a contemporary arrangement for concert band, fanfare and brass band.
