Description:
Out of Doors is one of Bartók's most original and evocative works. Originally composed for piano, this suite unfolds a soundscape of astonishing modernity, ranging from raw rhythmic energy to nocturnal hues and virtuosic exuberance. This arrangement for wind orchestra presents three of its movements. "With Drums and Pipes" opens the suite with percussive, hammering music: over persistent ostinatos and struck chords, pipe motifs with a folk-like charm take hold, creating a wild and primal atmosphere. "The Night’s Music"—one of Bartók’s most famous works—then paints an extraordinary nocturnal landscape: rustling, distant calls, and the sounds of birds and insects emerge from a mysterious silence, creating a floating, fascinating atmosphere. Finally, "The Chase" concludes the triptych with a breathless chase, featuring rapid runs and irresistible energy, culminating in a frenzied finale. The wind orchestra serves this music perfectly: the diversity of its timbres and the power of its percussion reinforce the rhythmic force, the nocturnal hues, and the brilliance of the original. A challenging and spectacular work of great atmospheric richness.
