After the successful soundtracks he had written for the cartoons 'The little Mermaid', 'Aladdin' and 'Beauty and the Beast', Alan Menken was asked by the Walt Disney Studios to write the music for their new cartoon film 'Pocahontas' made by Mike Gabriel and Eric Goldberg. It tells the story of John Smith, a courageous British adventurer, who falls in love with the young and obstinate Indian girl Pocahontas of the Powhatan tribe in America in 1607. In the end, understanding and persuasion will defeat prejudice and fanatism. Hans van der Heide made this nice medley containing the most beautiful melodies of this enchanting Disney story: 'Steady as the Beating Drum', 'Mine, Mine, Mine', 'A To', 'Colours of the Wind' and 'If I never knew you'.
