The Russian composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) is considered one of the most versatile music makers of his time. He wrote symphonies, piano concertos, chamber music, tone poems, operas and songs. He was also in great demand internationally as a concert pianist, and his extensive concert tours took him to Europe and the USA. During the First World War, he fled with his family via Sweden to the USA, where, however, he almost completely lacked the inspiration to compose. In 1930 he was drawn back to old Europe and bought a piece of land in Switzerland, where he had a villa built. Due to World War II, however, he had to flee again to the United States, where he finally died in Beverly Hills in 1943, shortly before his 70th birthday.

'Polka Italienne' is based on a melody that Rachmaninoff heard in Italy in the early 1900s from an old organ grinder. He liked it right away and wrote it down for piano immediately after his return to the hotel. The edition for piano four hands is considered the original edition today.

The German composer and arranger Stefan Schwalgin has now created a carefully edited and skillfully orchestrated new version that meets the conditions and requirements of a modern European wind orchestra and brings out the 'Polka Italienne' in wonderful wind sounds.
