The word Portent is defined as a sign or omen that signifies an event of great importance or consequence. I wrote this piece as a concert opener or festival selection. Sometimes, when a composer is writing, ideas start as small seeds and grow over time. This one, however, arrived full-blown and ready to go in one flash of inspiration. After the initial idea, it took me 4 hours to write. It was one of the most heated, lightning fast compositional experiences of my life.
