Commissioned to celebrate Jean Severance Ney and the "joy of music" she shares with so many people, especially in the state of Kansas… as well as the heartbeat of that joy, which she finds in the Kansas Flint Hills.

…And There Was Light
The first section of this composition conveys musical images of creation, beginning with two measures of "emptiness" that lead, through a crescendo, to the first moments of light.
The "heartbeat" that runs through this section is a sonic representation of the beginning of life.
The composer uses musically descriptive elements to depict the "prehistoric" days in the Flint Hills as well as the "wonders and grandeur" of creation.

Creatures of the Hills and Plains
The second section offers a playful and at times humorous musical vision of the interplay between the various creatures that have lived on Earth for centuries… and humans.
The "adventure theme," which represents humanity’s spirit of discovery, is at times overlaid by short, light, and playful atonal themes.

Of All That Is Good and Beautiful
The third section is very lyrical and seeks to convey the goodness in humanity, the beauty of nature, and the harmony that can arise from them.

(Reprise)
The "adventure theme" returns at the end, showing that life’s journey continues.
