Commissioned by the Village of Wouw (the Netherlands) Resonance Kevin Houben From Fanfare to Symphony, L'Aranciera Resonance is a musical representation of growth, identity and transformation. The work stems from the rich history of the Harmonie Oranje, which was founded in 1874 on the occasion of celebrations in honour of King William III. What began as a modest village fanfare – initially exclusively with brass instruments – developed into a full-fledged harmony orchestra at a high level, despite difficult times and multiple threats to its existence. This development forms the heart of the composition. The work is based on a nucleus of four notes (B, B, G, A), which runs as a musical motif throughout the piece and is constantly evolving. In the first part, there is an introspective and tense atmosphere: sound surfaces, clusters and gradual crescendos create a feeling of expectation and uncertainty. Here, the music reflects the fragile early years of the ensemble. Gradually, a more dynamic and energetic soundscape unfolds. Rhythmic impulses and richer orchestration symbolize the growth and renewed vitality of the association. In this middle section, the transition from fanfare to harmony orchestra is clearly audible: the sound becomes fuller, more colorful and more expressive. As the music progresses, it reaches greater complexity and size. Bitonal tensions and subtle allusions to a historical march – a reminiscence of the orchestra's past – combine tradition and renewal. This creates a dialogue between past and present. The finale is a powerful climax: a broad-based, energetic unfolding in which all musical elements come together. Here the full identity of the harmony orchestra is revealed – confident, multifaceted and future-oriented. Resonance is thus not only a reflection of musical history, but also a celebration of resilience, community and continuous development.
