Description:
Roma Aeterna is a programmatic composition in which Alexandre Carlin invites the listener on a musical exploration of Rome. The structure of the work follows an imaginary journey through the city, where different places and moments unfold in chronological order.
The composition begins with the awakening of Rome in the early morning, then continues along the Via Appia, one of the city’s oldest roads. The music then moves toward the Roman Forum, the historic center of political and social life. A lighter passage evokes the squares and fountains, where daily life unfolds to the rhythm of a tarantella.
The focus then shifts to the religious heart of Rome, the Vatican, where the music becomes calmer and more restrained. The following section is dedicated to the Colosseum and conveys the tension and harshness of this place through a more direct and powerful musical character: a gladiatorial combat takes place.
In the final section, "Roma Aeterna", the musical journey comes together. Previously heard elements reappear, emphasizing the enduring presence of Rome through the centuries.
