Silk Town was commissioned by the KEMS Macclesfield Wind Band in 2025. A key requirement of the commission was that the work should reflect an aspect of Macclesfield's history, culture or people. Henry Rankin chose to draw inspiration from the town's historic silk industry, which once formed the center of its identity and prosperity. The work, loosely programmatic in nature, depicts imaginary characters and scenes associated with the silk manufacturing process. Conceived as a symphonic poem set in Macclesfield - in the spirit of Richard Strauss' Alpine Symphony, but on a more intimate scale - the piece provides a vivid and colorful canvas for wind band. The theme heard in the third movement is taken from the Cheshire Mayday Carol, an anonymous traditional folk song from Cheshire. Silk Town is the winning work of the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles' Composition Competition 2025.
