Description:
Ragtime (ragged time), or rag for short, developed during the Dixieland jazz era of the late 19th century in the Midwest of the United States. One of the most important ragtime pianists was Scott Joplin. He composed a great many rags, of which 'The Entertainer' is probably the best known. Typical for the rag are the strong melodic syncopation (off-beat phrasing) and the often 'very many notes'! If you look at the fingers of the soloist in the 'spider-rag' it is clear where the title comes from. All 10 fingers move like a spider over the many buttons of the instrument.
