Description:

In Norse mythology, Svalin or Svöl (an. Svalin, Svol "the cool one") is a shield that the Aesir attached to the sun chariot of the goddess Sol. It is supposed to protect Sol and the chariot from the blazing heat of the sun. Svalin, the shield for the radiant god, stands in front of the sun; mountains and sea would go up in flames if it fell in front of the sun. After a mysterious introduction, the first theme sets out the adventures and battles in which the shield has taken part in the past. The quieter and melodious middle section, a tribute to the earth, gives the various soloists in the ensemble the opportunity to express their musicality. The return of the elements from the introduction this time illustrates the attacks of the sun's rays, which SVALINN, the shield, counteracts to achieve an energetic and magical "happy ending".
