Description:
The Land of Grace was commissioned by the 4th Division Wind Band of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. This work is a tribute to the 4th Division, whose mission is to protect Northern Kyushu - including Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Oita and Saga Prefectures.
I, the composer of this work, was born in Fukuoka Prefecture and lived there for about nineteen years until I graduated from high school. For me, Kyushu has always been a Land of Grace. From the vibrant cities and industrial areas to the lush natural landscapes, each region has its own unique charm, characterized by rich cultural traditions and the warm-hearted people who live there. With this piece, I would like to express my deep gratitude and respect to the 4th Division, whose dedication helps to preserve the peace and vibrancy of this special region.
The music features two short motifs derived from the bugle calls of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The first stands for the number "four", the second for a "division". By incorporating these familiar signals into the music, I wanted to honor the identity and spirit of the 4th Division.
The work begins with the soft glow of dawn spreading across the vast landscape, gradually fading into the lively rhythm of an awakening city. This is followed by a calm evening scene that reflects the warmth and harmony of daily life. In the conclusion, the main theme returns in a powerful reprise - as an expression of my sincere appreciation and encouragement for the men and women of the 4th Division.
The premiere took place on March 3, 2025 in Imari City, Saga Prefecture, under the direction of Lieutenant Mr. Hiroki Hayashida.
